COVID-19 Vaccine: AstraZeneca Final Results / Vaccination at Dialysis Clinics

Here are some of the recent developments on COVID-19 vaccines:

New AstraZeneca results: The overall efficacy of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine is slightly lower in the final efficacy trial results the company posted late Wednesday. The company had touted interim results on Monday, which the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases cautioned could be outdated or incomplete. In the latest results, the vaccine showed 76% efficacy against symptomatic COVID-19, whereas the interim results put the efficacy at 79%. In contrast, among adults aged 65 and older, efficacy was higher in the new analysis — 85%, versus 80% in the interim analysis. The new results include 49 additional COVID-19 cases, adding to the prior 141 cases out of some 32,000 trial participants. In both analyses, the vaccine showed 100% efficacy against severe COVID-19 or hospitalization.

Vaccination at dialysis centers: Many patients with chronic kidney disease will soon be able to be vaccinated against COVID-19 at their dialysis clinics, the CDC announced on Thursday. People who work at dialysis clinics will also be eligible for vaccination there.
